    In each period alkaline earth metals have atomic number greater than alkali metals by 1 unit and their size is little smaller compared to alkali metals and hence, volume is more than alkali metals.
    We define density as,

    As mass increases and volume decreases density increases.
    Moreover alkaline earth metals exhibit a stronger metallic bond than alkali metals because they contain two electrons in their outermost shell whereas alkali metals have one electron. Hence, alkaline earth metals are very dense compared to alkali metals.
