Question

If the intermolecular forces vanish away the volume occupied by the molecules contained in 4.5Kg water at STP will be:

  1. 5.6 m3
  2. 4.5 m3
  3. 11.2 L
  4. 11.2 m3

hintHint:

In the absence of intermolecular forces, water will exist in vapor form.

The correct answer is: 5.6 m3

    From ideal gas equation, we know PV = nRT = w/m RT
    At STP, P = 1 atm and T = 273 K,
    w = 4.5 kg and m = H2O = 1 x 2 + 16 = 2 + 16 = 18
    Substituting the values,
    1 x V = 4.5 x 1000 / 18 x 0.0821 x 273
    V = 100.85 x 1000 / 18 = 5600 L = 5.6 m3
    Hence, V = 5.6 m3
