Question

Protons, neutrons, and electrons are all known to exist in atoms. What will be the atomic mass if the mass of the neutron is half that of the proton, and the mass of the proton is assumed to be twice that of the neutron?

  1. Less to 14.28%
  2. Constant
  3. Same
  4. Greater to 14.28%

hintHint:

% increase in atomic mass = (Difference in mass divided by Original mass) cross times100%

The correct answer is: Greater to 14.28%

Atomic mass of an atom(M) = n + p = 2p(as mass of proton and neutron is equal), where n is mass of neutron and p is mass of proton.
    Given, n' = 1/2(p) & p' = 2n' = 2*1/2(p) = p
    Now, M' = n' + p' = 1/2(p) + 2p = 5/2p = 2.5p
% increase in atomic mass = (Difference in mass divided by Original mass) cross times100%
    = (0.5 divided by 2) cross times 100% = 25%
There will 25% increase in atomic mass.
