Question

A line segment has endpoints at (2, 3) and (− 7, 3). Find the distance of this segment?

  1. 9
  2. 4.5
  3. 81
  4. 5

hintHint:

If there are two points left parenthesis x subscript 1 comma y subscript 1 right parenthesis and left parenthesis x subscript 2 comma y subscript 2 right parenthesis ,then distance between two points is

The correct answer is: 9

    Using distance formula,
Distance = square root of open parentheses x subscript 2 end subscript minus x subscript 1 end subscript close parentheses to the power of 2 end exponent plus blank open parentheses y subscript 2 end subscript minus y subscript 1 end subscript close parentheses to the power of 2 end exponent end root
Length of line segment has endpoints at (2, 3) and (− 7, 3) = square root of left parenthesis negative 7 minus 2 right parenthesis to the power of 2 end exponent plus blank left parenthesis 3 minus 3 right parenthesis to the power of 2 end exponent end root
= square root of negative 9 to the power of 2 end exponent plus blank 0 to the power of 2 end exponent end root
= square root of 81 plus 0 end root
    = square root of 81
    = 9
Therefore, Length of line segment has endpoints at (2, 3) and (− 7, 3) is 9.
