Question

A rod of length 12m is cut into small rods of length 1 fraction numerator 1 over denominator 2 end fraction m each. Find the number of small rods that can be cut.

  1. 3
  2. 5
  3. 8
  4. 12

hintHint:

If the long rod is being cut into small rods ,then to find the number of small rod we need to divide the length of long rod by the length of the small rod being cut.

The correct answer is: 8

    The length of long rod = 12 m ; The length of small rods = 1 1 half m
The number of small rods = 12 divided by 1 fraction numerator 1 over denominator 2 end fraction
=12 divided by fraction numerator 3 over denominator 2 end fraction
equals 12 cross times fraction numerator 2 over denominator 3 end fraction
    equals 8 rods
Therefore, the number of 1 1 half m that can be cut from a 12 m rod is 8 .
