Question

Amelia is picking marbles in the marble boxes of different colors. She picks 18 marbles from the first box, 24 marbles from the second box, 30 marbles from the third box, 36 marbles from the fourth box, and 42 marbles from the fifth box. If this pattern continues, the number of marbles will Amelia pick from the sixth box is

  1. 44
  2. 46
  3. 48
  4. 54

hintHint:

We are given that Amelia is picking marbles of different colors from different boxes. She picks marbles from 5 different boxes. We are told that number of marbles picked, forms a pattern or in other words a sequence. We are asked to find the number of marbles she will pick from next box. We will find the relation between the sequence. And then we will use it to find the next number of marbles.

The correct answer is: 48

    The sequence will be 18, 24, 30, 36, 42
We have to find out which rule is used to form this pattern.
    We will try subtraction
    24 – 18 = 6
Now, we will add the constant 6 and see if we get the next term.
    18 + 6 = 24
    24 + 6 = 30
    30 + 6 = 36
    36 + 6 = 42
The pattern matches the given pattern. Now, we will add 6 to last term to find next terms.
    42 + 6 = 48
So, the number of marbles Amelia picks up from the sixth box is 48.

For such questions, we should know the basic operations. When the rule used to write the pattern is not mentioned, we have to use all four operations to check the pattern. The operations are addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
