Question
An art club sells 23 small candles and 42 large candles each week. Write an expression showing the total number of candles they sell each in 7 weeks.
- 23(7 + 42)
- 7(23 + 42)
- 42(7 + 23)
- 7(23 × 42)
Hint:
Distributive property is the law in which we can solve problems which are in the form a(b+c). To solve this type of problem we just have to multiply a with b and then c which can be written as ab+ ac and then finally add them. It is one of the common formula which is used to solve problems. Here, we have to solve the word problem using distributive property.
The correct answer is: 7(23 + 42)
In the question it is given that,
The number of large candles the art club sells= 42
The number of small candles the art club sells = 23
Here, we have to find the total number of candles they sell in 1 week.
Total number of candles = (23+42)
Total number of candles they sell in one week i.e. 7 days = 7(23 + 42)
So, total number of candles they sell in one week is 7(23 + 42).
Therefore, the correct option is b, i.e., 7(23 + 42).
In distributive property, when a factor is to be multiplied with the sum of two numbers, we do not directly add the two numbers and then multiply the sum with the factor. Rather, we multiply both the numbers with the factor differently and then add the multiplication value.
