Question

Calculate the distance between the following ordered pairs (0, 5) and (0, -5)?

  1. 10 units
  2. 11 units
  3. 12 units
  4. 14 units

hintHint:

We are given coordinates of two points. We are asked to find the distance between the two points. The points are (0,5) and (0,-5). First, we will see if they are in the same quadrants or adjacent quadrants. And we will see if they have any coordinate same. Then using this information we can find the distance.

The correct answer is: 10 units

The given points are (0,5) and (0,-5).
If we see, they have the same x coordinate. And their y coordinate has opposite signs. It means they are in adjacent quadrants.
We will find the absolute values of both the points. Absolute value means their distance from the respective axis. It is always positive. Here we will be counting the distance from the x axis as it’s x component is same.
The absolute value of the point (0,5) is |5|
The absolute value of the point (0, -5) is |-5|
Now, to find the distance between the points in adjacent quadrants we will add the absolute values
    So distant = |5| + |-5|
    = 5 + 5
    = 10
Therefore, the distance between the two order pairs is 10 units.

When two axis, x and y divides a plane into 4 parts it is called as quadrants. There are four quadrants. First quadrant has positive x and positive y values. Second quadrant has positive y and negative x. Third quadrant has x negative and y negative. Fourth quadrant has y negative and x positive.
