Question
Each row in the classroom has 11 girls and 12 boys. There are 9 rows in that class. Write a numerical expression to show the number of students in that class.
- 11(9 + 12)
- 11(9 × 12)
- 9(11 × 12)
- 9(11 + 12)
Hint:
Distributive property is the law in which we can solve problems which are in the form a(b+c). To solve this type of problem we just have to multiply a with b and then c which can be written as ab+ ac and then finally add them. It is one of the common formula which is used to solve problems. Here, we have to solve the problem using distributive property.
The correct answer is: 9(11 + 12)
In the question it is given that,
Number of girls = 11
Number of boys = 12
Total number of rows= 9
We have to find the numerical expression to show the number of students in that class.
Total number of boys and girls = 11+12
So, the numerical expression to show the number of students in that class is 9(11 + 12).
Therefore, the correct option is d, i.e., 9(11 + 12).
In distributive property, when a factor is to be multiplied with the sum of two numbers, we do not directly add the two numbers and then multiply the sum with the factor. Rather, we multiply both the numbers with the factor differently and then add the multiplication value.
