Question

Find the equation that represents the total area of the rectangle

  1. 7 x (5 + 8)
  2. 5 x (7 + 8)
  3. 5 x (7 + 8)
  4. 7 x (5 +3)

hintHint:

We are given a rectangle. It is divided into two parts. Each part is made up of smaller squares. We have to find the area.

The correct answer is: 7 x (5 +3)

    The rectangles are made up of small squares.
    Each square represents 1 unit.
    So, the length of the rectangle will be number of vertical squares.
    Length = 8
    Similarly, width will be number of horizontal squares.
    Width = 7
    When the rectangle is divided into two parts, length is divided.
    The width of the parts is same.
    Length = 5 + 3
    Area of a rectangle = length × width
    = (5 + 3) × 7
    = 7 × (5 + 3)
    This is the required area.

    When rectangle is divided into smaller parts, area gets divided. The area of the total shape will be sum of the area of the parts.
