Question

Frolic made gift bags for his teachers. He made 6 identical bags with 1 gift card, 2 packages of beef jerky, and 5 chocolates in each. The expression represents this situation is,

  1. 6 (1 + 2 + 5)
  2. (6 + 1) × (6 + 2) × (6 + 5)
  3. 6 (1 × 2 × 5)
  4. 6 + (1 × 2 × 5)

hintHint:

Distributive property is the law in which we can solve problems which are in the form a(b+c). To solve this type of problem we just have to multiply a with b and then c which can be written as ab+ ac and then finally add them. It is one of the common formula which is used to solve problems. Here, we have to solve the problem using distributive property.

The correct answer is: 6 (1 + 2 + 5)

In the question it is given that,
Total number of gift bags= 6
Number of gift card in each bag=1
Number of packages of beef jerky in each bag= 2
Number of chocolate in each bag=5
We have to find the numerical expression for the given situation using distributive property.
Total items in each gift bag = (1+2+5)
    Number of bags = 6
    So, the numerical expression will be 6 (1 + 2 + 5).
    Therefore, the correct option is a, i.e., 6 (1 + 2 + 5).

In distributive property, when a factor is to be multiplied with the sum of two numbers, we do not directly add the two numbers and then multiply the sum with the factor. Rather, we multiply both the numbers with the factor differently and then add the multiplication value.
