Question

How many variables are there in the expression 3 x squared y ?

  1. 3
  2. 2
  3. 6
  4. 4

hintHint:

The above expression represents an algebraic expression. Algebraic expression has two components, variable and constant. Variable a quantity which doesn't not have any fixed value. It is generally denoted by alphabets. Constant is a quantity with fixed value. In the given question, we have to find number of variables present in the expression.

The correct answer is: 2

    The given expression is 3x2y.
In the above equation we have to find number of variables present. We can see there are two different alphabets x and y. But x is raised to power 2. It means that x is multiplied by x. Or in other words x is taken twice. So, if we count the number of alphabets it's 3. So, the variables are 'x', 'x', and 'y'.
Therefore, option (a) which is '3' is the right answer.
