Question

Identify the equation in general form for the line with slope 3 and y-intercept –4

  1. 3x – y – 4 = 0
  2. 3x – y + 4 = 0
  3. 3x + y – 4 = 0
  4. 3x + y + 4 = 0

hintHint:

Equation of a line, when its slope and intercept is given can be given as- y = mx + b, where m = slope and b = y-intercept.

The correct answer is: 3x – y – 4 = 0

    GIVEN-
    Slope (m) = 3
    y-intercept (b) = -4
    TO FIND-
    Equation of the given line in general form
    SOLUTION-
    We know that equation of a line in slope intercept form is y = mx + b.
    Substituting values of m and b, we get-
    y = 3x + (-4)
    ∴ y = 3x - 4
    0 = 3x - y - 4 .......................... (Subtracting y from both sides)
    FINAL ANSWER-
    Option 'a' i.e. '3x – y – 4 = 0' is the correct answer to the given question.
