Question

Jim made a pattern using square tiles.

If the pattern continues, the number of square tiles required to make the 6th shape is

  1. 12
  2. 18
  3. 24
  4. 36

hintHint:

We are given a pattern of shapes made from tiles by Jim. The number of tiles is increasing with the number of shape. We are asked to find the tiles in the sixth shape. We will find the rule used to write the pattern. Using the rule, we will find the number of tiles used for sixth shape.

The correct answer is: 36

The number of tiles is increasing with number of shape.
The number of shape and tiles are as follows:
The first shape requires 12  = 1 tile.
The second shape requires 22 = 4 tiles.
The third shape requires 32 = 9 tiles.
If we see, the number of tiles is the square of the number of shape.
So, sixth shape will have 62 tiles = 36 tiles.

We have to be careful about the order of the shape and number of tiles.
