Question

Mia makes jewellery to sell at an art fair. Her revenue, in dollars, can be modelled by the function f(x) = x2 - 10x + 3 , where x represents the number of items she makes and sells. The cost of her supplies can be modelled by the function g(x) = x + 7. Select the function that models Mia’s profit.

  1. x2 - 9x + 10
  2. x2 + 4x - 18
  3. x2 - 11x - 4
  4. -x2 + 11x + 4

hintHint:

Profit = Revenue – Cost
Profit = f(x) - g(x)

The correct answer is: x2 - 11x - 4

    Given revenue, f(x) = x2 -10x + 3 and cost g(x) = x + 7
    Profit = Revenue – Cost
    Profit = f(x) - g(x) = (x2 - 10x + 3) - (x + 7) = x2 - 10x + 3 - x - 7
    Profit = x2 - 11x - 4
