Question

A student earned a grade of 80% on a math test that had 20 problems. How many problems on this test did the student answer correctly?(Round to the nearest whole number)

  1. 16
  2. 15
  3. 14
  4. 22

hintHint:

1. When a certain quantity is divided into 100 equal parts and a certain part of it is to be expressed in terms of the whole quantity, that portion is called as a percent, represented with a % sign.
2. Percentage marks earned = Number of questions answered correctly/ Total number of questions * 100.

The correct answer is: 16

    Given-
    Percentage marks earned = 80%
Total number of questions = 20 problems
    To find-
    Number of problems answered correctly
    Solution-
    We know that-
Percentage marks obtained = Number of questions answered correctly/ Total number of questions * 100.
                                         ∴ 80 = Number of questions answered correctly/ 20 * 100
                         ∴ 80 * 20 / 100 = Number of questions answered correctly
∴                                       16 = Number of questions answered correctly
Final Answer- Option 'a' i.e. '16' is the correct answer to the given question.

We assume that each question has an equal weight attached to it and hence, all questions are worth equal marks.
