Question

Roy has a 15 feet long steel rod. He plans to cut the rod into pieces that are each fraction numerator 5 over denominator 3 end fraction foot long. How many pieces can he cut?

  1. 6
  2. 8
  3. 9
  4. 12

hintHint:

The number of pieces he can cut is equal to the total length of the steel rod divided by length of each piece he wish to cut.

The correct answer is: 9

The number of pieces he can cut is equal to the total length of the steel rod divided by length of each piece he wish to cut.
Here total length = 15 feet and length of each piece = 5 over 3 space foot
So, Number of pieces = 15 divided by fraction numerator 5 over denominator 3 end fraction

When there is a fraction in the denominator then we multiply the reciprocal of the denominator with the numerator to find the value of the problem.
15 cross times fraction numerator 3 over denominator 5 end fraction (Reciprocal of fraction numerator 5 over denominator 3 end fraction is fraction numerator 3 over denominator 5 end fraction)
    = 9 pieces
Therefore the total number of pieces he can cut is 9 pieces.
