Question
Smith is drawing stars in his notebook. He draws 20 stars on the first page, 25 stars on the second page, 30 stars on the third page, 35 stars on the fourth page, and 40 stars on the fifth page. If this pattern continues, how many stars will Smith draw on the sixth page?
- 42
- 50
- 45
- 55
Hint:
We are given the that, Smith is drawing different number of stars on different pages. The number of stars represent number of sequence. We have given number of stars up to 5th page. We have to find number of stars on 6th page. We will find the relation between the first two terms. Using the relation, we will find the required value.
The correct answer is: 45
The number of stars are 20, 25, 30, 35, 40
We are asked the number of stars on sixth pages. It means we have to find the next term in the series.
We will subtract the first term from the second term.
We will see if we get a constant that we can use to write the complete pattern.
25 – 20 = 5
Now, we will add this constant from the second term to see if we get the third term. The number sequence of increasing. So, we need to add the constant.
25 + 5 = 30
30 + 5 = 35
35 + 5 = 40
All the terms matches the terms of given sequence. So, we will continue the addition to find the number of stars on sixth page.
40 + 5 = 45
Therefore, number of stars on sixth page will be 45.
For such questions, we should know the basic operations. When the rule used to write the pattern is not mentioned, we have to use all four operations to check the pattern. The operations are addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
