Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
5x + y = -10
2x + 5y = 19
- -3, 5
- 4, 5
- 1, 10
- 2, 5
Hint:
The linear equation in two variable is an equation with two variable and degree one.
The correct answer is: -3, 5
Step 1 of 1:
We have Given two linear equations
5x + y = -10……………………………… 1
2x + 5y = 19……………………………… 2
Now we will rewrite equation 1 and then substitute the value of one variable.
5x + y = -10
y = -10 – 5x
Step 2 of 2:
Substituting y in second equation,
=2x + 5(-10 – 5x)
= 2x + (-50 – 25x)
=2x - 50 – 25x
-50 – 23x = 19
-23x = 19 + 50
-23x = 69
x = -3
Substituting x in first equation,
5x + y = -10
5(-3) + y = -10
-15 + y = -10
y = 5
In the substitution method, we first write one variable in the form of another variable.
