Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
x – 3y = 1
-3x – y = -13
- 1, 4
- 4, 1
- -4, -1
- 4, -1
Hint:
The linear equation in two variable is an equation with two variable and degree one.
The correct answer is: 4, 1
Step 1 of 1:
We have given two linear equation
x – 3y = 1……………………………. 1
-3x – y = -13……………………………. 2
From 1
x – 3y = 1
x = 3y + 1………………………………. 3
Substituting x value in 2nd equation,
-3(3y + 1) – y = -13
-9y – 3 – y = -13
-10y – 3 = -13
-10y = -10
y = 1
Substituting y value in 3rd equation,
x - 3(1) = 1
x - 3 = 1
x = 4
In the substitution method, we first write one variable in the form of another variable.
