Question
Some members of the Bird Club used a tally chart to record how many different birds they each saw one day. Mr. Molina saw 5 fewer birds than Mr. Dobbs and Miss Simmons combined. How many birds does Mr. Molina see?

- 10
- 15
- 20
- 11
Hint:
A tally chart is a simple way of recording and counting frequencies.Tally charts are used to collect data quickly and efficiently, since filling a chart with marks is much speedier than writing words.
The correct answer is: 10
Here, we have to find the number of birds Mr. Molina saw.
No. of birds Ms. Chester saw in one day = 7
No. of birds Mr. Dobbs saw in one day = 4
No. of birds Miss Simmons saw in one day = 11
Mr. Molina saw 5 fewer birds than Mr. Dobbs and Miss Simmons combined.
So, the combined birds of Mr. Dobbs and Miss Simmons are 4 + 11 = 15
Mr. Molina saw 5 lesser birds than these two members = 15 – 5
= 10 .
Hence, the correct option is (b).
Each occurrence is shown by a tally mark and every fifth tally is drawn diagonally to make a “gate” of five.
