Question

The capacity of a container was increased from 35 gallons to 50 gallons. Determine the percent mark-up.

  1. 42.85%
  2. 56.8%
  3. 62.15%
  4. 17.89%

hintHint:

A mark-up is the value added to the original value. And a percentage mark-up means a percentage increase in the original value. In this question, the capacity of a gallon is increased from 35 gallons to 50 gallons. It means there is an increase in the capacity, or in other words, a mark-up in the capacity. We have to find the mark-up percentage for this question.

The correct answer is: 42.85%

For this question, the original capacity is 35 gallons and the new capacity is 50 gallons.
Now we have to find the mark-up or increase in the original value. The formula for mark-up is as follows:
    Mark-up = new capacity - original capacity
    = 50 – 35
    =15
So the increase in capacity is 15 gallons
Let’s find the percentage mark-up. It means a percentage increase in the original value. In this case, the percentage increase in the capacity of gallons is the mark-up percentage.
The formula for mark-up percentage is as follows:
                                                     m a r k minus u p space space p e r c e n t a g e equals fraction numerator m a r k minus u p over denominator o r g i n a l space v a l u e end fraction cross times 100

For this case we can write,
                                                   m a r k minus u p space p e r c e n t a g e space equals fraction numerator n e w space c a p a c i t y minus o r g i n a l space c a p a c i t y over denominator o r g i n a l space c a p a c i t y end fraction cross times 100
Now we will substitute all the values.
    m a r k minus u p space p e r c e n t a g e space equals space fraction numerator 50 minus 35 over denominator 35 end fraction cross times 100
space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space
space space space
    15 over 35× 100
    = 0.4285 × 100
    = 42.85%.
So we can see that the percent mark-up in the capacity of the gallon is 42.85%.
Therefore, option (a), which is '42.85%' is the right option.

We have to be careful if the value is increased and decreased. We have to see to see if we are told to find mark-up or mark-up percentage.
