Question
The difference of 5 times x and 4 times y is 1. And the difference of 2 times x and y is -2. Find the value of x and y.
- -1, -2
- -3, -4
- 1, 2
- 3, 4
Hint:
An equation with the maximum order of 1 and an equation of a straight line is called the linear equation.
The correct answer is: -1, -2
Step 1 of 1:
We have given the difference of 5 times x and 4 times y is 1. And the difference of 2 times x and y is -2.
5x – 4y = 1……………………….. 1
2x - y = -2……………………… 2
From 2
2x – y = -2
-y = -2 – 2x
y = 2x + 2
Substituting y in 1st equation,
5x – 4(2x + 2) = 1
5x – 8x - 8 = 1
-3x - 8 = 1
-3x = 9
x = -1
y = 2x + 2
= 2(-1) + 2
=-4 + 2
= -2
The substitution method is the algebraic method to solve simultaneous linear equations.
