Question

The nth term of an Arithmetic Sequences. 5 , 2 , -1 , -4 , -7 … is

  1. 2n + 5
  2. 2n – 5
  3. 8 – 3n
  4. 3n – 8

Hint:

We will use the formula of AP to find the nth term of the series.

The correct answer is: 8 – 3n

    STEP BY STEP SOLUTION
    The given AP is 5 , 2 , -1 , -4 , -7
    Common diffrence = a = 5, d = 2 – 5 = -3
    To find the nth term we will use the formula
    an = a + (n – 1) d = 5 + (n – 1) (-3) = 5 – 3n + 3 = 8 – 3n
    The nth term = 8 - 3n
