Question
The sum of two numbers is 14, and their difference is 2. Find the number.
- 2, 4
- 8, 6
- 6, 8
- 1, 2
Hint:
An equation with the maximum order of 1 and an equation of a straight line is called the linear equation.
The correct answer is: 8, 6
Step 1 of 1:
We have given that,
Sum of two numbers = 14
Difference of two numbers = 2
Let the numbers be x and y (x>y)
x + y = 14…………………………….. 1
x - y = 2 ………………………….. 2
From 1
x + y = 14
x = 14 – y
Substituting x in 2nd equation,
14 - y – y = 2
14 – 2y = 2
-2y = -12
y = 6
Substituting y in 1st equation,
x + 6 = 14
x = 8
The substitution method is the algebraic method to solve simultaneous linear equations.
