Question

There are 28 students in a class. Sixteen of those students are men. What percent of the class are women? (Round to the nearest tenth)

  1. 46
  2. 42.85
  3. 44
  4. 45

hintHint:

1. When a certain quantity is divided into 100 equal parts and a certain part of it is to be expressed in terms of the whole quantity, that portion is called as a percent, represented with a % sign.
2. Percentage of women = Number of women/ Total number of students * 100.
3. Total number of students = Number of men + Number of women.

The correct answer is: 42.85

    Given-
    Number of men = 16
Total number of students = 28
    To find-
    Percentage of women
    Solution-
    We know that-
Total number of students = Number of men + Number of women.
    ∴ 28 = 16 + Number of women
    ∴ 28 - 16 = Number of women
    ∴ 12 = Number of women .......................... (Equation i)
Percentage of women = Number of women/ Total number of students * 100
    ∴ Percentage of women = 12 / 28 * 100 ...................................... (From given information & Equation i)
    ∴ Percentage of women = 42.857 ≈ 42.85%
Final Answer- Option 'b' i.e. '42.85%' is the correct answer to the given question.
