Question

What are the slope and y-intercept of the relation represented by the equation 10x + 5y – 15 = 0?

  1. Slope: 2, y-intercept: 3
  2. Slope: 2, y-intercept: –3
  3. Slope: –2, y-intercept: 3
  4. Slope: –2, y-intercept: –3

hintHint:

Equation of a line, when its slope and intercept is given can be given as- y = mx + b, where m = slope and b = y-intercept.

The correct answer is: Slope: –2, y-intercept: 3

    GIVEN-
    10x + 5y – 15 = 0
    TO FIND-
    Slope (m) and y-intercept (b)
    SOLUTION-
    10x + 5y – 15 = 0
    ∴                   5y = -10x + 15 ................................... (Subtracting 10x and adding 15 on both sides)
    ∴                     y = -10/5 x + 15 / 5
    ∴                     y = -2x + 3
Comparing the above equation with y = mx + b, we get-
    Slope = m = -2 and
    y-intercept = b = 3
    FINAL ANSWER-
Option 'c' i.e. 'Slope: –2, y-intercept: 3' is the correct answer to the given question.
