Question

Answer the following with the help of the data:

5, 5, 6, 6, 10, 15, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45, 50

What is the first quartile and third quartile of the data?

  1. 6, 45
  2. 15, 15
  3. 10, 30
  4. 6, 30

hintHint:

The median divides the data into a lower half and an upper half. The lower quartile is the middle value of the lower half. The upper quartile is the middle value of the upper half.

The correct answer is: 6, 30

Here, we have to find the 1st and 3rd quartile of the given data.
We have, number of terms = 13.
So, 1st quartile = fraction numerator left parenthesis straight n plus 1 right parenthesis over denominator 4 end fraction th term
equals fraction numerator left parenthesis 13 plus 1 right parenthesis over denominator 4 end fraction th term
    = 3.5
    = 4th term = 6.
And, 3rd quartile equals left parenthesis n plus 1 right parenthesis cross times 3 over 4
    = 14 × 0.75
    = 10.5
    = 10 th term = 30.

When evaluating the quartiles, always remember to first arrange the data in increasing order.
