Question

Which equation represents the line containing points M and N?

  1. y = –4x – 3
  2. y equals negative 1 fourth x minus 3
  3. y equals 1 fourth x minus 3
  4. y = 4x – 3

hintHint:

When we have 2 points that lie on a given line then we can find the equation of the said line by using the 2-point formula-
(y-y1) = (y2-y1) * (x-x1)
              (x2-x1)

The correct answer is: y equals negative 1 fourth x minus 3

    GIVEN-
    M (0,-3) and N (8,-5)
    TO FIND-
    Equation containing the points M & N.
    SOLUTION-
We know that M (0,-3) and N (8,-5) are 2 points on the given line.
    Hence, x1 = 0, y1 = -3, x2 = 8 and y2 = -5.
    (y-y1) = (y2-y1) * (x-x1)
                        (x2-x1)
    ∴ [y - (-3)] = [-5 - (-3)] * (x - 0)
    (8 - 0)
    ∴      y + 3 = -5 + 3 * x
    (8 - 0)
    ∴      y + 3 = -2/8 * x
    ∴            y = -1/4 x - 3 ................... (Subtracting 3 on both sides)
    FINAL ANSWER-
    Option 'b' i.e. 'y = -1/4 x - 3' is the correct answer to the given question.
