Question
Write an inequality to represent the following:
Karen has $25 to buy her best friend a gift. How much can the gift cost?
Let x represent the cost of the gift.
- x > 25
- x ≥ 25
- x < 25
- x ≤ 25
Hint:
We are given a statement. We have to write the expression of inequality for the given statement. We have to see the limits given for the required value.
The correct answer is: x ≤ 25
The given statement is as follows:
Karen have $25 to buy her best friend a gift.
We are asked how much the gift can cost.
The variable x represents the cost of the gift.
Karen have $25. This becomes the maximum limit. She cannot buy a gift that costs more than $25. But, the gift can cost less than $25 or $25 dollar.
So, the variable x can be less than or equal to $25
The sign for less than or equal to 25 is “≤25”
The mathematical representation of the inequality is as follows:
x ≤ 25
This is the given inequality.
For such questions, we have to be careful about the limits.
