Question
Write an inequality to represent the following:
Phil wants A grade on his math test. He needs at least 90% marks.
Let x represent the grade Phil gets on his test.
- x > 90
- x ≥ 90
- x < 90
- x ≤ 90
Hint:
We are given a statement. We have to write the expression of inequality for the given statement. We have to see the limits given for the required value.
The correct answer is: x ≥ 90
The given statement is as follows:
Phil wants A grade on his math test. He needs at least 90% marks.
The variable x represents the grade Phil get on his test.
Phil needs at least 90% marks means, this is the minimum limit of the marks he need to get A grade. He can get any marks above 90% or 90%. But, the marks shouldn’t be below 90 %.
So, the variable x can be greater than or equal to 90%.
The sign for greater than or equal to 90% is “≥90%”
The mathematical representation of the inequality is as follows:
x ≥ 90%
This is the given inequality.
For such questions, we have to be careful about the limits.
