Question
Write an inequality to represent the following:
Tracy's car can fit up to 5 friends. Which inequality represents the number of friends she can drive?
Let x represent the number of friends Tracy can fit in her car.
- x > 5
- x ≥ 5
- x < 5
- x ≤ 5
Hint:
We are given a statement. We have to write the expression of inequality for the given statement. We have to see the limits given for the required value.
The correct answer is: x ≤ 5
The given statement is as follows:
Tracy’s car can fit up to 5 friends.
We are asked to find inequality for the number of friends she can drive
The variable x represents the number of friends that can fit Tracy’s car.
Tracy’s car can fit 5 friends means, this is the maximum limit of the number of friends that can fit her car. She can drive number of friends equal to 5 or less than 5. As more friends cannot fit in the car, 5 is the limit.
So, the variable x can be less than or equal to 5
The sign for less than or equal to 5 is “≤5”
The mathematical representation of the inequality is as follows:
x ≤ 5
This is the given inequality.
For such questions, we have to be careful about the limits.
