Question
Write the equation of a line that passes through the point (3,1) with a slope of -2 in point slope form.
- y - 1 = 1/2 (x - 3)
- y + 1 = 2 (x + 3)
- y - 1 = - 1/2 (x - 1)
- y - 1 = - 2 (x - 3)
Hint:
Point-slope form of equation of a line is y - y1 = m (x - x1)
where m is slope and ( x1 , y1 ) is the point .
The correct answer is: y - 1 = - 2 (x - 3)
Given: Point is (3,1) and slope is -2.
Step 1 : Point-slope form of equation of a line is y - y1 = m (x - x1)
Step 2 : Substituting (3,4) in (x1, y1) and -2 in m,
we get y - 1 = - 2 (x - 3)
y - 1 = - 2 (x - 3) is the desired equation .
Point-slope form of equation of a line is y - y1 = m (x - x1)
