Question

Write the equation of the line that passes through the points (1, 2) and (-2, 5).

  1. y=x+3
  2. y=-x+3
  3. y=-x+1
  4. y=3x+3

hintHint:

slope m of line given points ( x1 , y1 ) and ( x2 , y2) is   fraction numerator y subscript 2 minus y subscript 1 over denominator x subscript 2 minus x subscript 1 end fraction

for intercept solve for b and put x and y and slope.

The correct answer is: y=-x+3

    The points that lie on the line are (1, 2) and (-2, 5).
    Slope of line =left parenthesis 5 minus 2 right parenthesis divided by left parenthesis negative 2 minus 1 right parenthesis
    =space 3 divided by left parenthesis negative 3 right parenthesis
    = -1
    Let the y-intercept be b
    The slope-intercept form of equation of the line is y=mx+b
    Let us substitute x=0
    5= -2(-1)+b
    b= 5-2
    b= 3
    So, the equation of the line is y=−x+3

    given two points first find slope then
    using slope and one point find intercept.
