Question
You have a summer job that pays time and a half for overtime (any hours over 40 in a week). Overtime is 1.5 times your hourly rate of $ 7.00/hr. How much money will you make if you work 50 hours in one week?
- $ 385
- $ 350
- $ 525
- $ 400
Hint:
Here, the pay is function of number of hours worked in a week.
The correct answer is: $ 385
We have to find the amount paid for working 50 hours in a week if the pay is $7 per hour and the overtime pay is 1.5 times the normal pay.
Let x be the number of hours and f(x) be the pay.
f(x) = 7x, x ≤ 40
f(x) = 7×40 + (1.5×7)(x – 40) = 280 + 10.5x – 420 = 10.5x – 140 (when x > 40)
For x = 50, f(x) = 10.5x – 140 = 10.5×50 – 140 = $385.
Hence, the correct option is B.
We can also find the total pay by multiplying 40 by 7 and 10 by 10.5 and then adding the results.
