Question

A Student estimates the weight of astronauts on the moon by multiplying their weight by the decimal 0.1666666..., What fraction can be used for the same estimation ?

hintHint:

Perform necessary multiplications to make it as a fraction.

The correct answer is: 1/6

    Complete step by step solution:
    Let x = 0.1666666
Now multiply by 10 on both the sides,
    We get, 10x = 1.666666
On subtracting x from both the sides, we have

    10x - x = 1.666666 - 0.1666666
rightwards double arrow 9 x space equals space 1.5
rightwards double arrow x space equals space fraction numerator 1.5 over denominator 9 end fraction
Multiply by 10 on numerator and denominator of x.
On multiplying, we have 15 over 90. (Since the numerator and denominator of a fraction
    must be integers)
On simplification, we get 1 over 6
    Hence 0.1666666…. = 1 over 6
