Question

A Conical vessel of radius 6 cm and height 8 cm is completely filled with water. A Sphere is lowered into the water and its size is such that when it touches the sides it is just immersed. What fraction of the water overflows ?

hintHint:

Volume of cone equals 1 third pi r squared h
Volume of sphere equals 4 over 3 pi r cubed

The correct answer is: 607.37

    Explanation:
    • We have given a Conical vessel of radius 6 cm and height 8 cm is completely filled with water. A Sphere is lowered into the water and its size is such that when it touches the sides it is just immersed
    • We have to find the fraction of the water overflows.
    Step 1 of 1:
Since, it is given sphere touches the cone
So, radius of sphere = radius of cone
    Volume of cone

    equals 1 third pi r squared h

equals 1 third pi 6 squared cross times 8
equals fraction numerator 288 pi over denominator 3 end fraction
    Volume of sphere

    equals 4 over 3 pi r cubed

    equals 4 over 3 pi 6 cubed
    equals 864 over 3 pi
Now, The volume of water overflow will be

equals 864 over 3 pi minus fraction numerator 288 pi over denominator 3 end fraction

equals fraction numerator 580 pi over denominator 3 end fraction

    = 607.37
