Question

A college mathematics department plans to spend straight $1,800 buying computers and books. Each computer costs straight $300 and each book costs straight $90 . Which equation represents this situation, where x is the number of computers and y is the number of books that the department can buy?

  1. 300 text x end text plus 90 text y end text equals 1 comma 800
  2. 90 x plus 300 y equals 1 comma 800
  3. 390 left parenthesis x plus y right parenthesis equals 1 comma 800
  4. 1 comma 800 left parenthesis x plus y right parenthesis equals 390

The correct answer is: 300 text x end text plus 90 text y end text equals 1 comma 800

    HINT:- Total amount to spend is the sum of cost of x computer and y books.
    Explanation :
    The total amount to be spent is given as $1,800 and this amount to be spent  on books(where ,cost of each book is given as $ 90) and computer (where ,cost of each computer  is given as $ 300).
    Total no. of computers =x (given)
    Total no. of books =y(given)
    Step 1: Finding the cost of x computer = no. of computers cross times cost of each computer
    = x cross times$ 300
    Finding the cost of y books = no. of books cross times cost of each book
    = y cross times$ 90
    Step 2: Total amount to be spend  = $1,800
    cost of x computer +  cost of y books = Total amount to spend
    300x = 90y + 1800
    ∴ 300x = 90y + 1800 represents the given situation
