Question

Consider the function f(x) = 2Ix + 1I – 7.
A linear function containing one branch of the function is f(x) = 2(x + 1) – 7. What linear function contains the other branch?

  1. y = 2(-x + 1) – 7
  2. y = -2x – 9
  3. y = 2x + 5
  4. y = -2x – 5

hintHint:

When we use absolute value function it is broken down into parts .In one we take the variable in that function greater than 0 in other part we take the variable in that function lesser than 0.

The correct answer is: y = -2x – 9

    When x + 1 > 0, f(x) = 2(x + 1) – 7
    When x + 1 < 0, f(x) = -2(x + 1) – 7 = -2x – 9
    So  x + 1 < 0, f(x) = -2(x + 1) – 7 = -2x – 9 is the second part of the function.

Know what an absolute function is.
