Question

A motorcyclist rides in a vertical circle in a hollow sphere of radius 14 m. Find the minimum speed required so that he does not lose contact with the sphere at the highest point.

  1. 12 m/s
  2. 14 m/s
  3. 11 m/s
  4. 16 m/s

hintHint:

F equals m v squared over r

The correct answer is: 12 m/s

    Radius of the sphere, r = 14m
    Minimum speed, v = ?
At the highest point the centrifugal force and weight of the motorcyclist are equal in magnitude.
therefore F equals fraction numerator m v squared over denominator r end fraction equals m g
    therefore    v squared equals r g
v equals square root of r g end root
equals square root of 14 cross times 9.8 end root
equals 11.71 space straight m divided by straight s
Minimum speed of the motorcycle = 11.2m/s
