Question

There are two cars, car A and car B. Mass of car A is 3000 kg, travelling at 40 m/s collide with car B of mass 4000 kg travelling at 20 m/s in same direction. After collision, the velocity of car A becomes 50 m/s. Calculate the velocity of car B after the collision?

  1. 12 m/s
  2. 12.5 m/s
  3. 13 m/s
  4. 14 m/s

hintHint:

Use the law of conservation of momentum.

The correct answer is: 12.5 m/s

    Given that-
    Mass of car A = 3000 Kg
    Speed of car A = 40 m/s
    Mass of car B = 4000 Kg
    Speed of the car B = 20 m/s
    Final speed of car A = 50 m/s
    Let the final speed of car B = v m/s
    Using the law of conservation of momentum,
    (3000 x 40) + (4000 x 20) = (3000 x 50) + (4000 x v)
    1,20,000 + 80,000 = 150000 + 4000v
    50000 = 4000 v
    v = 50000/4000 = 12.5 m/s
