Question

Two bodies of equal masses 'm' kg, separated by 'r' meters are attracted by a gravitational force F. Suppose the mass of a body is doubled and their distance of separation is tripled. What will be the ratio of their initial and final force of attraction?

  1. 9: 2
  2. 2: 9
  3. 2: 3
  4. 3: 2

hintHint:

Use the formula of force.

The correct answer is: 9: 2

    The correct option is a)9: 2.
    Force =fraction numerator G M m over denominator R squared end fraction
    Here, G is gravitational constant, M is mass of one object, m is mass of another object and r is the distance between them.
    F initial = Gm2/ R2
    Now when we double the mass of an object and tripled the distance then the formula will be:
    F final=fraction numerator G 2 m x m over denominator left parenthesis 3 R right parenthesis squared end fraction
    F initial : F final = 9:2
