Question

A certain number of men can finish a piece of work in 100 days. If there were 10 men less, it would take 10 days more for the work to be finished. How many men were there originally?

hintHint:

Hint:
When two quantities of different units are compared and expressed as a ratio, it is known as Rate. For example, a car travels at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour, then it means in one hour it covers 100 kilometres.

The correct answer is: 110 men

    Let’s say that the total work can be represented as W and let’s say the number of men who can finish the work in 100 days is x. It is given that if there are 10 men less, it would take 10 days more for the work to be finished or we can say x-10 men can finish the work in 110 days.
    Step 1 of 2:
    Work done by x men in 100 days = W
    Work done by x men in 1 day = W over 100
    Work done by 1 man in 1 day = fraction numerator W over denominator 100 x end fraction
    Step 2 of 2:
    Work done by x-10 men in 1 day = fraction numerator W over denominator 100 x end fraction cross times left parenthesis x minus 10 right parenthesis
    Work done by x-10 men in 110 days = fraction numerator w over denominator 100 x end fraction cross times left parenthesis x minus 10 right parenthesis cross times 110
    Also, Work done by x-10 men in 110 days = W
    So, fraction numerator W over denominator 100 x end fraction cross times left parenthesis x minus 10 right parenthesis cross times 110 = W
    110x - 1100 = 100x
    10x = 1100
    x = 110 men
    Final Answer:
    Hence, there were originally 110 men.
