Question

By completing scatter plots for each of the following data sets, describe the correlation between x and y as positive, negative or none.

hintHint:

scatter plot has a negative correlation, if the trend line has a negative slope. This means the trend line will be down wards. On the other hand, if the slope of the line is positive, the correlation is also positive.
We are asked to graph the scatter plot and find whether the correlation is positive, negative or none.

The correct answer is:

    Step 1 of 2:
The coordinate points for the given table are:
    (1.1,22),(1.8,12),(1.2,19),(1.3,15),(1.7,10),(1.9,9),(1.6,14),(1.6,13),(1.4,16),(1,23),(1.5,16)
The scatter plot based on the coordinate points is:

    Step 2 of 2:
The trend line for the scatter plot is:

Here, the trend line is drawn downwards. This means, the slope is negative. Thus, we can say that the correlation among x and y are negative.

We could possible draw numerous trends for a line. But the main purpose is to describe the pattern of the values from the line. So, it is necessary to choose the best fit for the set of values.
