Question

In triangle ABC above, side AC is extended to
point D. What is the value of y-x?

  1. 40
  2. 75
  3. 100
  4. 140

hintHint:

Hint:
To find the value of y-x, we first need to find the value of x and y
There are two properties we need to know to find them. The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180.
And the exterior angle theorem which states that if a triangle's side gets extended, then the resultant exterior angle is always equal to the sum of the two opposite interior angles of the triangle.

The correct answer is: 100

Given, ABC is a triangle, AC is extended to point D.
Also, straight angle B A C equals 105 to the power of ring operator
straight angle A B C equals 35 to the power of ring operator
straight angle B C A equals x to the power of ring operator
straight angle B C D equals y to the power of ring operator
Now, we know that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180°.
    So,
straight angle B A C plus straight angle A B C plus straight angle B C A equals 180 to the power of ring operator
not stretchy rightwards double arrow 105 to the power of ring operator plus 35 to the power of ring operator plus x to the power of ring operator equals 180 to the power of ring operator
not stretchy rightwards double arrow 140 to the power of ring operator plus x to the power of ring operator equals 180 to the power of ring operator
not stretchy rightwards double arrow x to the power of ring operator equals 180 to the power of ring operator minus 140 to the power of ring operator
not stretchy rightwards double arrow x to the power of ring operator equals 40 to the power of ring operator
    Next,
By exterior angle theorem, if a triangle's side is extended, then the resultant exterior angle is always equal to the sum of the two opposite interior angles of the triangle.
Here, AC is extended to AD. The exterior angle is straight angle B C D  The opposite angles are straight angle A B C  andstraight angle B A C.
    So
    straight angle B C D equals straight angle A B C plus straight angle B A C
not stretchy rightwards double arrow y to the power of ring operator equals 35 to the power of ring operator plus 105 to the power of ring operator
not stretchy rightwards double arrow y to the power of ring operator equals 140 to the power of ring operator
    Thus, we get the values
x to the power of ring operator equals 40 to the power of ring operator text  and  end text y to the power of ring operator equals 140 to the power of ring operator
    Hence, the required value of
y to the power of ring operator minus x to the power of ring operator equals 140 to the power of ring operator minus 40 to the power of ring operator equals 100 to the power of ring operator
    The correct option is C)

    Note:
It is important to know the basic properties of a triangle to solve such problems. The most important property to remember is; the sum the interior angles of a triangle is 180°. This is often used in solving problems in geometry.
