Question

Lawren has $1000 in a saving account. He wants to save at least $400 before winter. He withdraws $50 every week for daily requirements. Write an inequality that represents Lawren’s situation.

  1. 1000+50w greater or equal than 400
  2. 1000-50w greater or equal than  400
  3. 1000 + 50wless or equal than400
  4. 1000-50w less or equal than400

Hint:

We are given that Lawren has $1000 in a saving account. He withdraws $50 per week for daily requirements. He has to save at least $400 dollars. We have to write the inequality of the above equation.

The correct answer is: 1000+50w greater or equal than 400

Total amount in saving account is $1000.
Amount withdraw per week is $50.
The amount he has to save the least is $400.
Let the number of weeks he deduct the amount till he reached the balance of at least $400 be denoted by w.
The balance should be at least $400. So, the amount can be greater than or equal to this quantity.
Amount greater or equal than $400
    The amount $1000 is constant.
The amount deducted till he reached the least balance is $50×w i.e. 50w. The amount is deducted, so we will subtract it from the saved amount.
    The inequality will be
    1000 - 50w greater or equal than 400

For such questions, we have to see which quantity is constant and variable. We have be careful about the words like “at least”, “at most”, etc.
