Question
If the first two statements are true, is the final statement true?
Some of the cats are healthy
Mitzi is a cat
Mitzi is healthy
Which of the following answers is correct?
- Yes
- No
- Uncertain
Hint:
In deductive reasoning we use facts, definitions and postulates to draw a conclusion. There are two laws under deductive reasoning they are Law of Detachment and Law of Syllogism. Here, we have to determine which of these laws in applied here to draw the conclusion.
The correct answer is: Uncertain
In the question the given statements are,
Some of the cats are healthy
Mitzi is a cat
Mitzi is healthy
Here, we have to find whether the conclusion is correct or not.
From the above statements we can say that,
Some of the cats are healthy. It is not sure Mitzi is one of those cats.
So, the conclusion is uncertain.
Therefore, the correct option is uncertain.
In Law of Syllogism if a statement p equals q and if q equals r, then p equals r whereas in Law of Detachment if a statement p equals q where p is true then q is also true.
