Question

Martha is on a trip of 1,924 miles. She has already travelled 490 miles. She has 3 days left on her trip. How many miles does she need to travel each day to complete her trip?

  1. 450 miles/day
  2. 464 miles/day
  3. 478 miles/day
  4. 492 miles/day

hintHint:

Here Martha travelled 490 miles out of 1924. Find remaining miles , she has just 3 days need to complete the trip . For each day divide remaining miles by 3.

The correct answer is: 478 miles/day

Here we have to find the miles of each day to complete Martha’s trip.
Firstly , we have total miles to cover for trip is 1924.
Now, she already travelled 490 miles.
    Remaining miles are,
    1924 – 490 = 1434
The total miles left to cover is 1434. She has 3 days left to cover the remaining miles for her trip.
    So we can write,
    3 days = 1434 miles
For 1 day , divide 3 from both side,
    3/3 days = 1434/3 miles
    1 day =478 miles
    Or,
    Let m = miles/day for remaining 3 days
    m =fraction numerator left parenthesis o r i g i n a l blank m i l e s blank – blank m i l e s blank a l r e a d y blank t r a v e l l e d right parenthesis over denominator 3 end fraction
m = fraction numerator left parenthesis 1924 blank – blank 490 right parenthesis blank over denominator 3 end fraction=fraction numerator 1434 over denominator 3 end fraction= 478 miles per day
There fore, she needs to travel 478 miles per day to complete the trip in 3 days.
The correct answer is 478miles/ day .

In this question , we have given the total miles and how miles had to be covered. Firstly find the remaining miles left to cover. And then divide the remaining miles by given day to find the miles cover in one day.
