Question
The graph of a linear function lies in the first and fourth quadrants. Which of the following CANNOT be true?
- It is an increasing function.
- It is a constant function.
- It also lies in the second quadrant.
- It also lies in the third quadrant.
Hint:
In this question , The graph of linear function lies in the first and fourth quadrants. We have to find the correct option which cannot be true about the function.
The correct answer is: It is a constant function.
Here we have to find the correct option which cannot be true.
Firstly , we have given that the graph is at fourth and first quadrant and also the graph is linear.
(1)The function is may or may not be increasing , we can’t tell because the details are not quite sufficient.
(2)The function is may or may lies between second quadrant , we can’t tell because the details are not quite sufficient
(3)The function is may or may lies between the third quadrant , we can’t tell because the details are not quite sufficient
(4) The function is not constant, for the function having the constant it must their slope would be zero or it lies in horizontally ,but here we have function is in first and fourth quadrant so the function can’t be constant.
There fore, the correct answer is it is a constant function.
Or,
If it is a function, x has to change as y changes, but if that is true, the line cannot be constant for y unless it is in quadrants I and II, or III and IV, or it is the x-axis.
In this question, the function is lies between both first and fourth quadrant and also the function is linear. To find the correct answer just remember the properties of the graph and choose the correct answer.
