Question

In the xy-plane, line k with equation y = mx + b, where m and b are constants, passes through the point (-3, I). If line k is perpendicular to the line with equation y = - 2x + 3, what is the value of b ?

The correct answer is: 5/2

    Slope of y = - 2x + 3 is - 2
    Perpendicular slope = 1 half equals m
    y equals 1 half x plus b passes through (-3,1)
1 equals fraction numerator negative 3 over denominator 2 end fraction plus b rightwards double arrow b equals 1 plus 3 over 2 equals 5 over 2 equals 2.5
